5 Steps in Writing an A+ Term Paper
Submitted by sandra on January 13, 2009 - 2:30am.
Writing a term paper is a rite of passage for every student. The entire process will require a lot of sweat but the results will be more than satisfying. The task of writing is not as difficult as it seems as long as it is thought out in advance as a definite procedure with systematic commitment. Here are logical steps to follow as well as helpful tips on writing term papers. 1. Topic Selection – Most excellent papers are built around questions. The student can virtually find any subjects in textbooks and other print resources but choosing the right one is a bit daunting. The student must choose a specific subject that pique’s his or her interest and examine it carefully. The most common mistake students make in choosing a subject for a term paper is choosing one that is too broad or general. Students must focus on a limited aspect. Avoid topics that are too technical, specialized and learned. 2. Finding and Evaluating Sources – On this part, the student must look for relevant information that will support the topic of the term paper. Information can be sourced out from libraries and the Internet. The student may use three search techniques commonly used online like index search, keyword search or Boolean search. Sources can also be found on print resources (some may be offered on CD-ROM or e-books). Students must try to source out references that have been peer reviewed. 3. Gathering Efficient Notes – Students need to skim through their sources and locate useful materials including quotes and information for footnotes. The student must keep a complete and accurate bibliography and notes cards during the research process. A term paper must contain facts not just opinions. A student must include their personal insights and differentiate them from the sources that he or she has read. 4. Outlining and Organizing the Paper – Generally, an academic term paper has four parts: o Introduction – The student must identify the topic and explain why it is important. It must state the problem and be informative. o Body – It is the general text of the paper. A student may opt to discuss the subject by sections or chapters. o Conclusion – This is the most important part of the paper wherein the student needs to explain in detail what has been learned, decided, proven, etc. It should also demonstrate the implications of the paper on an area of societal concern. o Bibliography – This part must contain the list of books, articles, or other works consulted in the preparation of the paper. 5. Drafting and Editing – The student must write the paper around the outline. Facts and ideas must be written in an understandable manner. When editing, students must not only depend on using a spell and grammar checker. It is also important to have others read the term paper to gather feedbacks and comments. A term paper plays a crucial part as an indication of a student’s progress during a school term. Knowing these helpful tips would eventually equip students with techniques that they may use to write A+ term papers. »
