MLK commemorations at Olivet College

A cold Wednesday did not deter about two dozen folks from attending the annual bell ringing in remembrance of slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Since Olivet was closed on the actual holiday itself, events were held Jan. 20, beginning with a noon bell ringing and remarks in the college square.

This was followed by a dramatic, one-woman presentation on the life of civil rights pioneer

Fannie Lou Hamer, performed by E.P. McKnight and Kikao Imani Productions. The vision of

Hamer slowly descending the Mott Auditorium stairs was a sobering reminder of the journey traveled by this Mississippi voting rights activist. More than 75 students and staff attended the event.

The performance was preceded by selections from the Olivet College Jazz Band, led by adjunct instructor Jonathan Gewirtz, and featuring solos by band members including violinist ReBekah McDaniel.

Also planned was a Jan. 21 musical tribute to King, featuring visiting artists.
