A Crack in the Earth and Sea

Indonesia was struck by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake followed by a tsunami with waves rising to 20 feet.

AHA Centre said, “There are currently over 70,821 evacuees being housed in 141 evacuation sites.” In addition, 66,238 houses were also damaged on Friday, Sept. 28 during the combined disasters.

According to the Associated Press, most of the deaths were found in the city of Palu. In an email interview, Rendy Utomo Rachim, a 21-year-old resident of Palu, said that the biggest earthquake happened around 5 p.m. local time (6 a.m. Eastern Standard Time). “I was born and raised in Palu,” he said. “It is my home as it is so full of people that I love.”

Other countries began to lend aid after President Joko Widodo authorized the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) to “accept international help for urgent disaster and response relief,” according to The Jakarta Post. AHA Centre said that29 countries have o ered help as of Oct. 4 and The Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) has released a Response Plan that will“fund projects in logistics, water and sanitation, camp management, health, shelter, protection, and food security and liveli- hoods,” according to a United Nations (U.N.) Resident Coordinator.
