On Friday, Jan. 4 the Olivet’s men wrestling team travelled to Louisville, Kentucky to take part in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) tournament. A dozen players were qualified to wrestle.
The first wrestling match Olivet College had was against John Hopkins University, in a long match Olivet took the win, 30-10.
“I think we did really well the first match getting back into the flow of things because we just was getting out of that long ride,” said senior Jacob Harvey.
After having a break from the first match, Olivet got set to take on the fourth-ranked wrestling team in the country, Ithaca College from New York. In the second round of the match, the Comets lost 26-16. They were in the lead early but in the end, Ithaca took the lead and ran with it.
“We just didn’t wrestle as good as we know we can; we basically beat ourselves,” said junior Haydn Kinjorski.
After a tough loss, the Comets got set to go up against Heidelberg College from Ohio in the second
to last match of the tournament. The match between the Comets and the Student Princes went to a round three, with the Comets taking home the win, 26-16.
In the last match, the Comets ended the day of matches against Wisconsin Whitewater. This match was the closest match the Comets had. Whitewater took the win, 27-15.
The Comets will be at the Mid-States invitational at Alma College on Feb. 9. The NCAA DIII Central Regionals will be held at Wabash, Indiana, Feb.22-23, followed by the NCAA DIII Championships in Virginia in March. Coachis Brandon Brissette assisted by Adam Wilson and Jim Neal.
