OLIVET, MICHIGAN (Nov. 8, 2023)- Inside the Cutler Event Center a career fair was hosted by the Insurance and Risk Management seminar.
On Nov. 8, the Insurance and Risk Management seminar hosted a career fair inside the Cutler gym. The fair was attended primarily by IRM students, along with students from the business and computer science majors.
Over 15 companies were represented, including Farm Bureau Insurance, Auto-Owners Insurance, and the University of Olivet’s Career Leadership and Development department.
Some students were looking to secure summer internships, while others hoped to land jobs for after graduation. Students were encouraged to print copies of their resume for potential employers to review.
Junior, Tyler Herrema organized the event. He communicated with the companies before the fair, ensuring they would be present to interact with UO students.
The fair provided UO students with a glimpse into the insurance industry and a chance to talk with professionals working in the field. Students practiced their “elevator pitch”, a short speech explaining the skills they would bring to a workplace.
“I’m hoping that insurance companies view us as a very well-educated insurance program, and they look to our school for the kids that they hire when we graduate,” Herrema said.
Sophomores Jamie Stiver, Asia St. John, and Kelsee Lawson attended the event. Lawson said the event was a great opportunity to build connections and work on self-promotion.
According to St. John, the fair was a chance to practice her professionalism.
“Practicing first impressions is one thing we’re learning, that’s for sure,” said Stiver.
