Olivet Sports Round-Up

Women’s Basketball


The Comet’s Women’s Basketball team played at Trine University on Feb. 14 and lost to the Thunder. The Comets stayed close in the first quarter, but the Thunder continued to build on their lead throughout the game. The final score was 66-47. Senior Savanah Pavoni and Freshmen Savannah Brewer each led the team with 8-points.

 

On Saturday, Feb. 17 the team made the trip to Calvin University and to complete their conference play. The Comets led with 5-4 to start the game but the Knights took ahold of the lead and took on a 17-8 lead. The Knights didn’t look back throughout the next three quarters as they outscored the Comets. They finished the game with a score of 79-43.

 

Olivet now holds a 9-16 (6-10) record. The Comets will play in the MIAA tournament for the first time since 2016 on Feb. 21 at Trine University with the opponent being announced later this weekend.


Men's Volleyball


The Men’s Volleyball faced off with Wisconsin Lutheran on Feb. 17 in at double header at 1 pm and 3 pm. The Comets fell in the first match to Wisconsin Lutheran as they won the first set and then lost the next three. In the second match the Comets won the first, third and fifth sets to secure the win. The team finished with 61 kills, a tie for the third-most in school history.


Olivet now holds a record of 3-12 overall on the season. The team will travel to the Judson Tournament in Elgin, Illinois this Friday Feb. 23 to play Roosevelt and Judson followed by Midway, and Indiana Tech on Saturday Feb 24.

 

Men’s Basketball


Olivet’s Men’s Basketball traveled to Hope College on Wednesday, losing by a score of 95-47 to the Flying Dutch. Hope came out strong in the first quarter starting with a 14-0 lead and never slowed down. Although Olivet tried to work their way back into the game, the effort wasn’t enough. Both freshmen, Aden Hathaway and Nathan Richardson put up 9 points, with Connor Schipper trailing with 8 and Noah Wiswary chipping in with 3 assists.


The Comets traveled to Alma on Saturday, Feb. 17 to get a win 80-78 in overtime over the Scots. To start the game off the Comets gained a 13-point lead, with Alma answering back going on a 11-1 run. At the half Olivet lead the way at 40-33. Coming out of the half the Comets hit the Scots hard with a 17-point lead, they responded with 12-1 run. The teams continued to battle it out until it came to free-throws and made shots to determine the game. Freshman, Nathan Richardson finished the game with a lay-up to set the final score at 80-78. Freshman, Connor Schipper led with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks along with contributions from freshmen Aden Hathaway and Nathan Richardson. Senior, Drew Weber had 12 points and Noah Wiswary finished with 5 assists.


Olivet closed out their season with a record of 5-20 overall and 3-11 in the conference.


 


Wrestling


The University of Olivet Men’s Wrestling team traveled to Trine University for the 2024 Mid-States Invitational on Feb. 17. The invite hosted a total of 11 NCAA Division III schools from the Midwest.


As a team Olivet finished third finishing with 117 points. Comets junior, Boe Eckman won the 285-pound title, sophomore, Darren McLeod finished third in the 149-pound bracket, junior Jay Shull, placed fourth at 165 pounds, freshman Juwan Vines was fourth at 184 pounds and junior Kody Krupp came in fifth at 197 pounds.

 

Looking ahead the team will compete on March 1-2 at the NCAA Division III Central Regional at Ohio Northern University.

 

Men’s Track & Field


The Comets traveled to the Saginaw Valley University Tune-Up Meet on Feb. 16 and the team had several personal-bests.


Freshman Keegan Nutt cleared the pole vault bar at 13 feet, 7-1/4 inches. The mark is third all-time in school history. Junior Aaron Garcia threw a personal best in the shot put (35 feet, 7-3/4 inches) and weight throw (39 feet, 5 inches). Sophomore Charles Goldman had a career best mark of 36 feet, 9 inches in the triple jump. Senior Chris Davis finished third of 30 runners in the 800-meter run, clocking in a time of 1:56.25, a personal best. Sophomore Jonathan Holloway ran personal-best times of 7.60 seconds in the 60-meter dash and 51.80 seconds in the 400-meter dash. Senior Jordon Brown was second in the 200-meter dash (21.76). Senior Charles Miller placed seventh in the 60-meter finals (7.23).

Olivet is now preparing for the 2024 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday Feb. 24 at Trine University.

 


 

Women’s Track & Field


The Olivet’s Women’s Track and Field team also traveled to the Saginaw Valley University Tune-Up Meet on Feb. 16.

 

Junior Abbey Peters led the team with a school record breaking mile time (5:22.48). Freshman Aubrey Connelly had a persona best in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:45.92, making it the second fastest time in school history, also in the 600-meter run senior Allyson Stevens had a personal best time of 1:48.69 to rank third in school history. Junior London Eldridge ran a season-best time of 9.96 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and matched her career-best with a time of 27.42 seconds in the 200-meter run. Sophomore Natalia Johnson ran a  8.20 seconds in the 60-meter dash, a personal best and 26.72 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Both times are second all-time at Olivet. Sophomore Sarah Grove posted the second-fastest time in school history for the 3,000-meter run at 11:19.77. Senior Tonya Tepin moved up to seventh all-time with a time of 1:04.13 in the 400-meter run.

 

Olivet is now preparing for the 2024 MIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday Feb. 24 at Trine University.

 

Stunt


The team’s next competition is on Sunday, Feb 18 at Muskingum (Ohio).
