Sammy Whiteman is the head trainer for Olivet College Athletics. She has been working as a trainer at Olivet for five years.
“This was my first job- I was an intern here for 10 months, I was going to grad school at Defiance College, but then a position opened up here. I was an intern athletic trainer, then became head athletic trainer in the fall of 2020,” Whiteman said.
“I did grad school online, and I went to Bowling Green for undergrad,” she said.
She’s always wanted to become an athletic trainer because she said she likes helping people. She was good friends with her high school athletic trainer, and admired what she did.
“I went into athletic training for undergrad and wasn’t sure I was going to like it, but I ended up loving it,” Whiteman said.
Whiteman obtained her Masters degree in business, which she got online; she did some administration duties here at Olivet, but thinks she’s going to stick to athletic training for a while.
“During my free time I like hanging out with my friends, researching different athletic training techniques, taking care of myself and doing self care things.
Haley Diringer has known Sammy since November of 2019.
“I’ve worked here since then, I was assistant athletic trainer and she was assistant athletic trainer,” Diringer said.
Diringer describes Sammy as “bubbly, caring, and thoughtful.”
“But above all, Sammy takes time to get to know our student athletes and takes time to get to know them as people and not just student athletes.”
Brianna Taylor, who was an athletic trainer at Olivet but recently became an assistant athletic trainer at Western Michigan University, started working with Sammy back in August of 2019.
“Sammy is very outgoing and goes above and beyond for athletes and staff,” said Taylor. She describes Sammy as being very humble, and works hard and is always there for everyone.
