Streaming services have taken over the world, and with them came a resurgence of love for television shows past. For example, The Office became incredibly popular and peaked in viewership at 57 billion minutes watched until it was removed from Netflix at the start of 2021. More examples of television shows that gained traction (some even after being off the air for years) include Friends, Parks and Recreation, and The Golden Girls. But, what about the ones happening now? Some of the most incredible shows have aired in the last decade and don’t get enough credit, like Schitt’s Creek.
Schitt’s Creek is a Canadian sitcom created by (the show’s main characters) Eugene and Dan Levy. The father-son duo also starred as two of the lead roles in the show: Johnny Rose and David Rose. The show aired on CBC Television from 2015-2020. The series starred Eugene Levy, Dan Levy, Catherine O’Hara, and Annie Murphy.
Schitt’s Creek follows the Rose family and their riches-to-rags story. The family, once rich beyond belief, find themselves in financial ruin. Johnny, Moira, Alexis, and David must learn to live a completely new lifestyle with the help of the residents of Schitt’s Creek. Johnny is a supportive father and husband, working day and night to get them out of their financial crisis and back into the lives they once knew. Moira is a high-strung actress who struggles without her wealth. Alexis is the pair’s daughter without any experience working for anything. David is the pair’s son, also completely unsure of how to live without the world at his fingertips. Together, the family spends their time in Schitt’s Creek living in a motel, adapting to their new lives and trying to figure out how to get out of it.
This series is one of the most charming, engrossing things available on streaming services. Johnny and Moira have a beautiful bond, despite Johnny’s down-to-earth tendencies and Moira’s regular shrieking-in-the-closet moments, the two seem perfect together. David and Alexis have a relatable brother-sister bond that’s hard to dislike. Throughout the series, the family learns to love and appreciate each other more than they ever had before.
Overall, the characters are well-rounded, the acting is superb, and the writing is phenomenal. All these pieces come together to create a truly amazing sitcom. This show is bingeable and heartwarming. The series has received an incredible amount of praise over the years, earning 19 Primetime Emmy Nominations. Though this show receives plenty of awards, I just don’t hear it talked about enough. People need to be watching this! Watch it! You’ll probably love it.
Schitt’s Creek is now available to stream on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.
