Olivet College asks students to Be More, Do Good. Opportunities to do so are being offered by the Service Learning program.
There will be three weekend service trips this semester: Sept. 10-12, Port Austin; Oct. 22-24, Port Austin; and Nov. 12-14, Deerlodge, Tennessee.
“...there is only one cost for attending Weekend Service Trips and that is paying for your meals while we are driving too and from the trip location (1-2 cheap meals). All food, housing, and travel costs outside those meals are picked up by the Service Learning Department, so you don't have to worry about it,” said Jacob Richards, community service coordinator, in a recent email.
To sign up, send an email to jrichard@olivetcollege.edu. Reservations are limited and granted on a first-come, first-serve email basis.
"Everyone should do a service trip because it is something you can benefit from int the future and it looks good on your resume,” said Naquaria Ward, junior.
In a 2019 news article, Mike Fales, director of service learning and campus ministries and assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies and religion, reported 67 weekend service trips, 37 all-campus Service Days and 26 Alternative Spring Break trips. There have also been disaster relief trips, Greek service days and other opportunities.
