The University of Olivet's literary and art journal, The Garfield Lake Review, is open for submissions! The Garfield Lake Review is the annual literary and visual arts magazine produced by The University of Olivet students.
The Garfield Lake Review’s website states, “We have been in print since 1971 when a group of students and dedicated faculty met often at the Garfield Lake Review Tavern and dreamed up our journal.”
This year's theme is “Coming of Age”. Ella Gaffke, a media production senior, said “I think coming of age is about people maturing and growing”.
The journal is seeking submissions to show or tell it’s meaning through written and visual interpretations. Whether that be through fiction writing, poetry or a visual art piece, the Garfield Lake Review wants to see work from students and the public.
According to an email sent to the UO community from Dr. Trueblood, Submissions from the general public will close on Sept. 27 and for UO community members, on Sept. 27.
Decisions for chosen work will be made in December, with the journal’s release happening in the spring. “I love that they print an actual copy of everyone’s work,” Gaffke, said.
Once published they will produce a print journal and post an online edition on their website, www.garfieldlakereview.com. Contributors in the continental U.S. may receive a complimentary print copy.
Logan Schreiber, junior, editor of the Garfield Review said she returned for a second year as editor, to not only grow as a leader, but to help people get their work into the world and be heard. Schreiber said “I think students should know that there is no harm in submitting your work! It is free and easy to submit, and we take all kinds of literary work. From poetry, to prose, and visual art”.
Individuals can submit up to five pieces of work, in any combination of media, that can be reproduced on a page. Scheiber said, “There is a high chance we will publish your work (if you meet the theme), and we would love to showcase your creativity.” Artwork will be judged anonymously, so don’t be shy. Further details for submissions can be found here:
