On Feb. 13, 2025, in Adrian, Michigan, the University of Olivet’s men’s wrestling team won the MIAA Championship. A week later, head coach Brandon Brissette was named MIAA Wrestling Coach of the Year.
“What makes Brissette special is what you see is what you get he’s the same person that you see on the visit from the person that you see in the practice room and at tournaments,” said sophomore wrestler Mason Knight.
Brissette was a wrestler at Wartburg College where he was a four-year letter winner and selected three times to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWSA) All-Academic team.
While at Wartburg, he was also able to win the NCAA Division III National Tournament Championship and NCAA Division III National Dual Meet Team Championship two times and was also a two-time runner-up for the National Championship.
“Guys want to be MIAA Champions. Guys want to be regional placers and national qualifiers, All-Americans, and National Champions. And scholar All-Americans as well. You know that each guy, individually will have a goal, our team with have goals, and those will always stay the same,” said Brissette.
The Comets are coming off a solid performance at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships where three team members qualified to compete. Seniors Benyamin Kamali, Tyler Herrema, and Dylan Phelps all performed well with Kamali earning All-American honors.
“Coach Brissette is one of the most unique human beings I have ever met. He does not care about your wins and losses as an individual but wants progression in his athletes not just as wrestlers but young men outside of the wrestling room. He is the most honest and genuine person I’ve ever met and preaches Love and passion above all,” said Senior, Ramiro Guerrero.
